Annabelle is very sick. If you believe in prayers for dogs, please do so…

Annabelle will be spending at least a day or two at the animal hospital/vet as they try to figure out exactly what is wrong. The initial thought is that it's blood related, but I wouldn't rule out that there's a cactus or something in her belly. She's a weirdo, that one.

**Update: September 10, 2009 **

Annabelle is back home, on a bunch of meds, a "no playing" restriction and will be getting a followup trip back to the vet on Friday.

** Quick Update: September 09, 2009 **

Annabelle is making platelets! Barring any further unforeseen weirdess, she'll be headed home later today.

** Update: September 08, 2009 **

Still at the vet. Still with the low platelet count. The vet mentioned the "C" word as a base covering measure (we hope) but no improvement is not a good thing, is it?

** Update: September 07, 2009 **

Annabelle hasn't responded to treatment, so now we've moved to the day-long blood transfusion part of the story. She seems aware that she's sick, but she isn't all down about it. She's alert for the most part and being quite the good 'lil patient. She hasn't tussled with the IV, nor has she required the lampshade-around-the-neck thing.

Annabelle should behave this well when she's well, well. She does, sometimes…

** Updated **

Pending bloodwork, the diagnosis so far is that Annabelle has thrombocytopenia, or abnormally low platelets in her blood. Click here for all of the technical doctorspeak. Word is that she's "a little better" after the transfusion and she may be able to get to go home tomorrow. That's pending what happens over night, if anything, and the lab results. I just wish I was there so I could take her out rock scrambling and rabbit snooping.
